What You'll Need

  • Nail polish remover (acetone)
  • Cotton swabs
  • Clean cloth
  • Dish soap
  • Hydrogen peroxide

Step 1: Soak Up Excess Nail Polish

The first step in removing nail polish from cotton fabric is to soak up any excess polish. Use a clean, dry cloth or paper towels to dab the affected area. You should be careful not to rub or spread the stain.

Step 2: Apply Nail Polish Remover

Next, use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of nail polish remover to stain. If you do not have nail polish remover, you can also use acetone. Make sure to test any cleaning solution on a hidden section of the fabric to check for colorfastness before proceeding.

Step 3: Blot the Stain

Once the nail polish remover has been applied, use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stain. Do not rub the stain as this may cause it to spread. Continue to blot until the nail polish has been removed.

Step 4: Rinse with Cold Water

Rinse the affected area with cold water. The cool temperature will help to set the stain and make it easier to remove.

Step 5: Apply Dish Soap and Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix together a solution of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide and apply it to the stain. Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Step 6: Launder as Usual

Finally, launder the garment as usual. It's best to hang dry the garment instead of drying it in the dryer, which can set the stain.
