Step One: Blot the Stain

Begin by dampening a clean and soft cloth in cold water. Blot the stained area with the cloth, being sure not to scrub or rub the affected area. Blotting lifts nail polish and prevents it from spreading or smearing.

Step Two: Pre-Treat with Detergent

Mix together a few drops of laundry detergent into another clean cloth dampened with cold water. Again, blot the stained area with the detergent-soaked cloth and then rinse fabric immediately with more cold water.

Step Three: Rinse with Vinegar

Vinegar helps break down the stain further and is particularly effective on cotton and chambray fabrics. Fill a bowl with a cup of vinegar mixed with a quarter cup of cold water. Blot the stained area with the vinegar solution and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Step Four: Wash as Normal

After pre-treating the nail polish stain, it’s now time to wash the fabric as normal. Let fabric soak in a solution of warm water and laundry detergent before washing as normal in cold or warm water (depending on what the fabric label indicates). Hang dry the fabric and check to ensure that the stain has been removed.

Other Tips:

  • Test the vinegar solution on an inconspicuous area of your clothing before treating stained area.
  • Avoid using a hot iron on the stained area as this can cause the nail polish to set in place.
  • Do not mix bleach into any of the solutions as this can cause discoloration.
