Removing Dried Nail Polish Stains

If you notice dried nail polish on your business suit, first check the fabric’s care label for the recommended cleaning agent. For most fabrics, applying nail polish remover is appropriate. Use a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover to dab at the stained area. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the spot, as this could cause the stain to spread. Once the nail polish is removed and the area is dry, double-check the stain to ensure it’s completely gone.

Removing Wet Nail Polish Stains

If the nail polish is still wet, begin by holding a paper towel or cloth against the back side of the fabric to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Then, apply a spot treatment solution—such as dish detergent or a pre-treater—that’s appropriate for the fabric. Gently rub mixture into stained area using a soft toothbrush or clean rag. Soak the garment in cold water and repeat the process as necessary. If the stain persists, contact a professional dry cleaner.

Preventing Future Stains

Carefully read the care labels of all business suits to prevent future nail polish stains, as well as other common types of stains. For example, some fabrics are too delicate for spot treatments and require professional cleaning when stained with nail polish. Whenever possible, opt for fabric blends that contain polyester or wool, which can both be easily treated at home.
