It's best to clean a nail polish stain as soon as possible. Start by scraping off any excess nail polish with a dull knife. Then, blot away the remaining residue with a damp cloth.
Older stains can often be removed with a solution of denatured alcohol and cold water. First, mix together one part alcohol and two parts cold water in a container. Then, soak a cloth in the solution and apply it to the stained area. Finally, use a dabbing motion to remove the stain.
For tougher stains that won't come out with the methods above, try using a laundry spot remover or a grease-fighting dish soap. Apply cleaner directly to stain and work it in with an old toothbrush. As you scrub, the soap should start to break down the oily residue left behind by the nail polish. After the stain has been treated, wash the clothing according to the manufacturer's instructions.
In the future, be sure to cover your clothing when painting your nails. Wearing an apron or an old t-shirt will help protect your clothes from any errant drops or spills. Additionally, it's a good idea to keep a bottle of nail polish remover on hand just in case.
