If the mustard stain is still wet, begin by gently blotting the spot with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Do not rub or scrub, as this could cause the velvet fabric to become damaged and even more stained.
Next, mix a solution of equal parts warm water and mild liquid detergent. Dip a clean white cloth in the mixture and wring it out, then test it on an inconspicuous corner of the fabric to make sure it won't harm the color. When ready, apply the cloth to the affected area, blotting the mustard stain in a light, outward circular motion.
Mix two parts warm water and one part white vinegar, and dampen a new clean, white cloth in the mixture. Gently blot the affected area, but be sure not to scrub velvet. Doing so could damage delicate fabric and cause irreversible damage.
If the mustard stain is still visible, mix a solution of equal parts warm water and clear ammonia and apply the cloth with a light, circular blotting motion. Be sure not to soak the velvet fabric, as this could cause discoloration.
Once the mustard stain has been removed, rinse the area with warm water and let air dry. Do not use a hairdryer or other heating element to speed up the drying process, as this could damage the velvet fabric.
