The first step to getting rid of a mustard stain is by blotting the affected area with a dry cloth for a few seconds. Blotting helps to absorb the liquid and reduce the probability of the stain spreading. Do not rub it onto the fabric as this may cause the stain to spread even more.
Mix one tablespoon of laundry detergent with one tablespoon of white vinegar and stir until it forms a paste. Apply paste over the stain and allow it to sit for at least 5 minutes. This helps to break down the proteins in the mustard, making it easier to remove.
After treating the stain, place the affected fabric in the washing machine and fill it with hot water. Add the oxygen-based bleach, according to package instructions, and select a normal cycle. The oxygen-based bleach helps to further break down the stain, so it can be easily removed.
Once the washing cycle is complete, remove the item from the machine and hang it up to dry. Do not put the item in the dryer as this may set the stain and make it harder to remove. Allow the fabric to air-dry completely before checking to see if the stain has been removed.
