The minute you notice the mustard stain, act quickly to prevent it from setting in further. First, use a dull knife or spoon to gently scrape off any remaining pieces from the fabric. Then, dab the area with a cloth soaked in cold water to remove as much mustard residue as possible.
Now that you’ve scraped off the excess mustard, it’s time to pre-treat the stain. There are a few different options you can choose from here. You can either dab the stained area with white vinegar and let it sit for 10 minutes, or you can use a specialized stain remover. If you go the latter route, be sure to select one that’s formulated for delicate fabrics like swimsuits.
Once you’ve pre-treated the mustard stain, fill a sink or bucket with cold water and add a scoop of laundry detergent for every gallon of water. Using both hands, agitate the water and detergent mixture for about a minute, then submerge the stained portion of the swimwear for 30 minutes. After soaking, remove garment from water and rinse area with cold water.
Set the swimsuit out flat to air dry. Once it’s fully dry, check to see if the mustard stain is gone. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain comes out.
