Start by Removing Excess Mustard with a Knife

When dealing with a mustard stain, start by gently scraping away any excess mustard with a butter knife or other blunt-edged object. Be sure not to press too hard, as you don’t want to push the stain further into the fabric. Take precautionary measures to avoid damaging the fabric of your sweatpants.

Using Cold Water to Dismantle The Stain

Next, turn the sweatpants inside out, and run cold water through the reverse side of the stain, if possible. This will help loosen and dismantle the stain from the fabric fibers. If that’s not possible, simply hold the stained area underneath the running tap and lightly scrub it in a circular motion with your fingers.

Blotting Away Stain with a Clean Towel

Then, place a few layers of paper towel or a clean cloth underneath the stained area. Blot the stained area gently with a wet cloth, using cold water. Make sure not to rub the stain as it will spread. Keep blotting until the fabric is damp enough and the stain is transferred onto the towel.

Treating Stain with Laundry Detergent

Once it looks like the stain has been removed, turn the sweatpants right side out. Lightly sprinkle some laundry detergent over the stain and let it sit for up to 15 minutes. Then, soak the item in cold water for about 30 minutes.

The Final Step: Drying the Sweatpants

Finally, after washing the sweatpants, hang them up and allow them to dry in the open air. Do not place them in the dryer as the heat may cause the stain to set. Once the sweatpants have dried, spray the area with a stain repellent to protect the fabric from future stains.

Summary

By following these easy steps, you can easily remove mustard stains from your sweatpants and enjoy wearing them again. Make sure to scrape away any excess mustard before treating the stain with cold water and a laundry detergent. Blot the area with a clean cloth, then let sweatpants air-dry before using them again.
