If you’ve got a mustard stain on your silk shantung, the worst thing you can do is panic. Mustard has a lot of oil and its bright color can make it hard to remove, but if you follow the steps below, you can get rid of the stain quickly and easily.
The first step to removing a mustard stain is to blot stained area with a clean white cloth. Use light pressure and don’t rub the fabric--you want to avoid pushing the stain deeper into the fabric. Once you’ve blotted all of the excess mustard, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
Mix a few drops of liquid detergent with a cup of warm water, then sponge it onto the stained area. Let the detergent sit for five minutes before blotting it off with a clean cloth.
For tougher stains, you’ll need to do a spot cleaning. Start by getting a stain remover or an enzymatic cleaner from your local grocery store, then follow the instructions on package. Typically, you’ll mix the product with water and apply it to the stained area, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.
After you’ve pre-treated the stain, place the fabric in the washing machine and wash as usual. If stain is still visible, repeat steps 2 and 3 before putting the fabric in the dryer. It’s important that you don’t put fabric in the dryer until all of the stain has been removed, as heat could set stain in the fabric.
Once the fabric has dried, inspect the area to make sure the mustard stain has been removed. If the stain is still visible, mix a few drops of liquid detergent with a cup of cold water and apply it to the stained area. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then blot it off with a clean cloth. You may need to repeat this process until the stain is completely gone.
