Mustard stains can be notoriously difficult to remove from fabric, but don't worry--there are a few ways to tackle the stains and restore your dress to its former glory. The key is to act quickly, as the longer a stain is allowed to set, the harder it is to remove.

What You'll Need:

  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Liquid dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Oxygen bleach
  • Hydrogen peroxide

Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stain with Liquid Laundry Detergent

To begin, wipe the stained area with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any excess mustard. Then, create a mixture of 1 tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent and 2 cups of cold water. Soak a sponge in this mixture and use it to pre-treat the stained area.

Step 2: Rinse with Cold Water

Once you've applied the pre-treatment to the stain, rinse it with cold water. If a bit of stain still remains, move on to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Liquid Dish Soap

Next, apply a few drops of liquid dish soap directly onto the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Gently rub soap into the fabric with your fingers or a soft brush. Afterward, rinse soap off with cold water.

Step 4: Create a Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution

In a bowl, create a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part baking soda. Apply the solution to the stained area and rub it into the fabric using your fingers or a soft brush.

Step 5: Rinse with Hot Water

Once the vinegar and baking soda solution has been applied, rinse the area with hot water. If the stain has not been completely removed at this point, go on to the next step.

Step 6: Use Oxygen Bleach or Hydrogen Peroxide

If the stain is still persisting, apply oxygen bleach or hydrogen peroxide directly to the fabric. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse off with hot water. Keep in mind that hydrogen peroxide can cause discoloration, so test it on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first.

Step 7: Launder the Dress

Once you've followed the steps above, you should be able to launder the dress as normal. Make sure to read the care label, then wash the dress on the hottest water setting suitable for fabric. Finally, allow dress to air dry.

Conclusion

With the right know-how and a bit of elbow grease, you can easily remove mustard stains from your favorite shift dress. Just be sure to act quickly and follow the steps outlined above. Good luck!
