If mustard stain is fresh, the first step is to reduce its intensity. This can be done by blotting up the excess liquid with a clean paper towel or a cloth. Do not use a brush or any other kind of material as this may damage fabric. Once the spot is dry, create a mixture of water and liquid laundry detergent (1:1 ratio). Soak a cloth into mixture and dab on the affected area.
If the mustard stain has already set, use a spoon to carefully scrape off the solid bits. Then, make a cleaning solution by mixing ½ teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water. Soak the mustard-stained area for about 30 minutes. Afterwards, scrub with a soft brush and rinse with cold water.
To finish, pour some white vinegar onto stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wash the item as usual and check if the mustard stain is completely gone. If not, repeat the process again.
Once you successfully removed the mustard stain, hang the garment up and let it air-dry. Heat can “set” the stain again, so do not put the item in the dryer until you are sure that the stain is gone.
By following these easy steps, you will be able to handle mustard stains on polyester without too much effort.
