When mustard stains occur, time is of the essence. The quicker you act, the better chance you have of eliminating the stain. As soon as you realize there is a mustard stain, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the area, removing as much of the residue as possible.
Use a simple solution of cold water and mild laundry detergent to create a cleaning solution. Dip a cloth or sponge into the water and gently rub it onto stained area. This should help to loosen residue and absorb some of the stain. Continue to blot the area until no more mustard comes off.
Once you’ve blotted area as much as you can, pretreat the stain with an appropriate stain-remover product. Choose one specifically created for removing mustard stains if possible. If not, use a general-purpose stain remover and follow the instructions included on packaging. Allow the pretreatment to work for about 5 minutes before proceeding to the next step.
Place the garment in a washing machine and wash according to the fabric type on the label. You may choose to add a small amount of oxygen-based bleach or color-safe bleach, but only use these if the material is suitable for bleaching. Once the cycle is finished, inspect garment for any remaining stain.
If the stain remains after washing, try repeating pretreatment and laundering process once more. Otherwise, place the garment in the dryer and set the machine on low heat. Once the cycle is finished, examine the area for any trace of the stain.
With these five simple steps, you can quickly and easily eliminate mustard stains from Oxford fabric and have your garments looking like new again.
