The first step to cleaning mustard stains is to pre-treat the stain with a detergent. If the stain is particularly large or stubborn, you may need to apply additional detergent in a circular motion to help the cleaning process. When pre-treating stain, focus on the area around the stain, as that’s usually where the most residue will be. Make sure to use cold water when pre-treating the stain, as hot water can cause stain to set more firmly.
Once you’ve pre-treated and blot out the majority of the stain, it’s time to soak the dress. Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water and add a capful of gentle laundry detergent. You can also add a scoop of baking soda and a few tablespoons of vinegar to the water if desired. Submerge the dress in the mixture and let it sit for at least 15 minutes, or overnight if the stain is very stubborn. Once finished, empty the sink and rinse the dress thoroughly.
Now that the dress has been pre-treated and soaked, it’s time to wash the dress in your washing machine. Set the washing machine on the delicates cycle and use lukewarm water. Add a gentle laundry detergent and a scoop of baking soda if desired. Once the cycle is finished, inspect the stain to make sure it’s gone. If it’s not, repeat soaking and washing steps until the stain has been removed.
Once the stain has been successfully removed, it’s time to dry the dress. To avoid shrinking the fabric, hang the dress to dry. Never put a maxi dress in the dryer, as this can cause the fabric to shrink and the colors to fade.
