Keds are a classic and comfortable footwear choice – but like all shoes, they can be susceptible to stains. Mustard is particularly known for setting into fabrics, so it’s important to deal with the stain as soon as you can.

What You’ll Need

  • A cloth, sponge or soft brush
  • Dishwashing detergent or baking soda paste
  • White vinegar
  • Cold water

Step 1: Scrape Away Excess Mustard

Start by scraping away any excess mustard from the shoe. Use a soft cloth or brush to get rid of as much as possible. Do not use anything abrasive such as steel wool as this could damage the fabric.

Step 2: Apply Dishwashing Detergent or Paste

If there is still some of the stain left, mix a tiny amount of dishwashing detergent or baking soda paste with a bit of cold water and apply it to the stained area. Ensure it is a gentle paste and not too runny. Leave for around five minutes before wiping the shoe clean with a cloth.

Step 3: Rinse With Cold Water and White Vinegar

Rinse off any remaining detergent or paste with cold water and a cloth, then follow up with white vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar helps break down the stain, so aim to leave the vinegar on the shoe for a few minutes.

Step 4: Dry and Put On Enjoy!

Let the shoe air dry in the open before wearing. Once it’s dry, the stain should be gone, and you can enjoy wearing your Keds again!
