What You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Cotton cloths
  • Clean sponge
  • Laundry detergent

Step 1: Scrape off any excess mustard

Using the back end of a spoon or dull knife, gently scrape away any excess mustard from the fabric. Be careful not to press too hard as this could cause the stain to spread further.

Step 2: Pretreat with dish soap

Using a clean sponge, apply a generous amount of dish soap to the stained area. Gently rub dish soap into the fabric in a circular motion. Leave soap on the fabric for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.

Step 3: Soak the fabric in a vinegar solution

In a large bowl, mix together a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. Place the stained area of fabric in the bowl, making sure that it is fully submerged. Soak the fabric for 30 minutes before removing it from the solution.

Step 4: Pretreat with baking soda

Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Using a damp cloth, gently rub the baking soda into the fabric in a circular motion. Rinse off the baking soda with cold water.

Step 5: Wash in warm water

Wash the clothing in warm water using a mild laundry detergent. Let the clothing soak for an additional 10 minutes before washing it in the machine. Line dry or tumble dry on low heat.
