Step 1: Act Quickly

As with any stain, time is of the essence. The longer mustard sits on fabric, the harder it will be to remove it. So act quickly and treat the stain as soon as you can.

Step 2: Blot the Stain

Grab an absorbent cloth, such as a white cotton towel, and blot the affected area. This will help to soak up some of the mustard and prevent it from seeping further into the fabric fibers.

Step 3: Apply Detergent

Mix a solution of mild liquid detergent and cool water. Gently apply this solution over the stain and let it sit for several minutes. This will help to break down the mustard and aid in the removal process.

Step 4: Rinse and Blot Again

Rinse the detergent solution away with cool water and then dab the area with the absorbent cloth to remove as much liquid as possible. Do not rub the cloth against the fabric as this may cause the stain to spread.

Step 5: Apply White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of the best ways to tackle tough stains. Pour a small amount of the vinegar onto the stain and then work it into fabric using your fingertips. Leave the vinegar on the fabric for several minutes, then rinse away with cool water.

Step 6: Rub in Baking Soda

If stain remains after the vinegar treatment, try rubbing a small amount of baking soda into the fabric. This should help to lift the remaining mustard particles and lighten stain. Rinse away the baking soda with cool water.

Step 7: Pre-Treat with a Stain Remover

If the mustard stain is still visible, try pre-treating the area with a stain remover that is specifically designed for use on delicate fabrics. Follow the instructions on the package for best results.

Step 8: Launder as Usual

Once you have finished treating the stain, launder the garment according to the care instructions. Set the machine to its coldest setting and add a chlorine bleach that is safe for the fabric. Wash the item separately from other clothing and inspect for success when it is done.
