What You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • White vinegar or dish soap
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • Ammonia (optional)

Step 1: Blot Up the Stain

Using a clean cloth, gently blot the area around the stain. Do not scrub or rub spot, as this may push the stain further into fabric. Try to absorb as much of the stain as possible before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Treat With Vinegar or Dish Soap

Take a cloth soaked in white vinegar or dish soap and dab it onto the mustard stain. Be sure not to use too much liquid. Leave the vinegar or dish soap on the stain for about 5 minutes, then rinse the area with warm water.

Step 3: Rinse With Cold Water

Once you've treated stain with vinegar or dish soap, rinse the area with cold water to remove any remaining residue. Use a clean cloth to soak up any excess moisture.

Step 4: Treat With Baking Soda or Ammonia

If stain persists after following the steps above, try treating it with baking soda or ammonia. Mix a teaspoon of either ingredient with a tablespoon of water and dab the mixture onto stain. Allow the mixture to sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Finishing Up

Once stain has been removed, launder the evening gown according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the stain persists, repeat the cleaning steps, or take the item to a professional dry cleaner for more thorough cleaning.
