Step 1: Blot the Stain

First, assess the affected area and grab a paper towel or a clean cloth. Begin to blot the mustard stain, being careful to press down gently and avoid rubbing or smearing the stain. Keep blotting until the excess mustard is absorbed into the cloth or paper towel.

Step 2: Determine Cleaning Type

Now that the excess mustard is removed, determine what type of fabric your dress is made of. If it is a natural fiber, like cotton or linen, move on to step three. If your dress is made of a synthetic material, like polyester, go ahead and move on to step four.

Step 3: Natural Fiber Treatments

If your dress is a natural fiber, places a few drops of undiluted white vinegar directly on top of stain. Let the vinegar sit for 20 minutes, then rinse the dress with cold water. After rinsing, dab the area with a cloth or paper towels to dry.

Step 4: Synthetic Fiber Treatments

If your dress is made of a synthetic fiber, apply a pre-treatment product to the stained area. After applying the pre-treatment product, use the hottest water temperature listed on the care label to launder the dress. Place dress in the washer and check the stain before drying the dress. If the stain remains, repeat steps 3 and 4 until it is completely gone.
