The supplies you need depend on the severity of the stain. To successfully remove mustard stains, you will need a few simple cleaning items.
Before starting stain removal process, use a paper towel or washcloth to absorb any excess moisture from the stained area. Be sure not to rub it too hard to avoid spreading the stain.
Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon of mild detergent with 2 cups of warm water and stir to combine. Dip a sponge in the cleaning solution and rub it lightly on the stained area. Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the fabric for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with a damp cloth.
If the mustard stain still remains after using the cleaning solution, mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of baking soda to make a paste. Gently rub the paste onto stained area and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes. Afterward, rinse the fabric with a damp cloth.
If the stain is still present after using the vinegar and baking soda paste, use hydrogen peroxide. Carefully pour a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide onto the stained area and blot it with a soft cloth. Wait several minutes and then rinse the fabric with cold water.
For tough mustard stains, apply rubbing alcohol to the stained area. Let the rubbing alcohol sit on fabric for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water. Wash the fabric afterwards, according to the care label instructions.
To prevent future mustard stains on your cotton gingham items, be sure to blot off any excess condiment before it soaks into the fabric. You can also place a protective barrier such as a cloth napkin between the condiment and fabric.
