Step 1: Blot Stain

The first step to removing a mustard stain is to blot the affected area with a damp cloth or paper towel. Do not rub or scrub fabric as this could spread the stain further. You may want to use an old cloth or paper towel that you don’t mind staining further.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Once you've blotted stain, you can pre-treat it with a laundry detergent or spot cleaner. Apply the product directly to the stained area and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing with cold water. For best results, use a product designed for stain removal.

Step 3: Wash the Fabric

Once pre-treatment is done, you can wash the item in the washing machine using cold water and the gentle cycle. If stain still isn’t entirely gone, repeat the pre-treatment and then wash again. To ensure the fabric doesn’t shrink, only use cold water and a gentle cycle.

Step 4: Air Dry

Finally, air dry the item outside or in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Do not put the fabric in the dryer until you are sure the stain has been completely removed.

Additional Tips

  • If you don’t have a laundry detergent or spot cleaner, you can apply white vinegar or baking soda to the stain before washing.
  • Before trying any of these methods, always test the product or cleaning method in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.
  • If the stain persists after washing, you may need to take the garment to a professional dry cleaner.
