If you’ve found a mustard stain on your favorite blouse, one of most important steps is to act quickly. Blot up as much of the mustard as possible with a clean towel. Be sure not to rub the spot or you risk spreading the stain. If you have access to it, try soaking the affected area of fabric in cold water for about 30 minutes. This will help to loosen up the stain and make it easier to get out.

Once you’ve soaked the fabric, pre-treat the stained area with a laundry pretreatment product. You can also try a mixture of vinegar and baking soda or liquid laundry detergent. Let the pre-treatment sit for a few minutes before washing. If you have color-safe bleach, pour some on the stain and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing.

Wash the item according to its care label instructions. If stain isn’t gone after the first wash, repeat the entire process until the stain lifts out. Once the item is washed, check to ensure the stain is gone. If it’s still visible, try adding a cup of lemon juice to a clean bucket of warm water and soaking the item for another 20 minutes. Then, wash the item again and check for stain.

No matter how careful you are with food or condiments, sometimes accidents happen. But with the right method and cleaning products, you can get that mustard stain out of your favorite blouse and make it look good as new.
