Freshly Cleaned Ballet Flats: How to Remove Mustard Stains

No matter how careful you are with your ballet flats, it's only a matter of time before they pick up a stain or two. Mustard stains can be particularly stubborn and hard to remove, but with the right products and techniques you can have your ballet flats looking squeaky clean in no time.

What You'll Need

  • Dishwashing soap or laundry detergent
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Warm water
  • A soft cloth

Instructions

  1. Start by dabbing area with a damp cloth. As you do this, you'll be removing the excess mustard from the fabric.
  2. Mix a few drops of dishwashing soap or laundry detergent with some warm water. Dip a soft cloth into the soapy mixture and then dab area with the stain. Don't rub too hard as it might damage the delicate fabric on the ballet flats.
  3. If the stain has already loosened up, rinse the area with clean water and then leave the shoes to dry.
  4. If the stain is still visible, mix a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of baking soda. Use your fingers to spread the mixture over the stain, making sure to cover the entire area.
  5. After the mixture has had time to sit and work its magic (say 5 minutes or so), rinse the stained area of the ballet flats with warm water.
  6. Lastly, later the shoes to air dry.

Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure you use a mild, gentle soap. Avoid using harsh cleaners and solvents like acetone, as these can harm the fabric of your ballet flats.
  • Always test the cleaning mixture on an inconspicuous part of your ballet flats first.
  • If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may need to repeat the process until it is fully gone.
  • You can also treat stains on ballet flats with white vinegar or lemon juice.
