If the velvet is still wet, begin by gently blotting away as much of the mud as possible with a clean, dry cloth. Be sure not to rub the fabric, as it may spread the stain further.
Mix a solution of one teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the solution and lightly scrub the stained area onto the velvet. Again, take care not to rub the fabric too hard.
Rinse the area with clean water and a damp cloth, then blot dry.
If the spot-cleaning method does not work, you may need to give the velvet a deeper cleaning. Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water and add a capful of mild detergent. Submerge the velvet and let it soak for 15 minutes.
Gently swish the fabric around in the water but avoid rubbing or scrubbing the fabric, as this can cause damage to the velvet.
Remove the velvet and rinse it with clean water, then blot the fabric dry.
Another option that can help remove mud stains from velvet is steam cleaning. Before beginning this process, check the velvet’s care tag for recommended cleaning methods. If steam cleaning is indicated, you can use either a handheld steamer or a full-sized steam cleaner.
Direct the steam at stained area, allow steam to penetrate the fabric for several minutes, then blot the area with a clean, damp cloth.
Mud stains can be pesky, but don’t fret—with a few simple steps, you can remove mud from velvet and make it look like new again.
