Use a dull knife or spoon to gently scrape off any caked-on mud from the fabric. Be careful not to damage the fabric.
Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or pre-treatment solution to the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help break down the mud and other debris embedded in the fabric fibers.
Rinse the fabric in cold water to remove the pre-treatment solution and any loosened mud. If the stain is still visible, repeat steps 2 and 3 before moving on to the next step.
Soak the fabric in cool water and a mild detergent for 30 minutes. If the stain has not faded, you may need to use an enzyme-based cleaner after soaking.
Apply a small amount of a specialty stain remover directly to the mud stain. Allow remover to sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Put the fabric in the washing machine and set the water temperature to cold. Use a mild detergent, and avoid chlorine bleach and fabric softener. Check the fabric after the cycle is complete to make sure the stain has been removed.
Once the fabric is clean, place it in the dryer on low heat or hang it to air dry. Avoid high heat, which can set stain permanently.
Once the fabric is dry, inspect it for any remaining mud stains. If the stain persists, repeat steps 4 - 7.
