Whether you’re dealing with a small spot from a passing mud puddle, or a larger stain from a walk through a muddy field, knowing how to clean mud stains from tops can save time and money. The good news is that cleaning mud stains isn’t complicated. Keep reading to learn the best methods for getting those pesky mud stains out of your favorite shirts!
Before beginning any cleaning process, scrape away as much of the mud as possible. Use a dull knife to loosen the dried mud and gently pick at it with your fingers. This will help ensure the cleaning process is more effective.
Once you’ve removed as much mud as possible, pre-treat the stain with detergent. You can use liquid detergent or a paste made of powdered detergent and water. Use a toothbrush to work detergent into the fabric prior to washing. Wait 10-15 minutes before moving to the next step.
Next, wash the item with cold water on the delicate cycle. If possible, select a gentle detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics, such as Woolite. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of detergent and soap residue.
If there is still a hint of a stain after washing and drying, spot treat area again with a damp cloth. Work a bit of detergent into the fabric and let it sit for 10 minutes. once again, rinse thoroughly and allow the garment to dry.
Once the garment is completely dry, inspect it for any remaining mud stains. If they are still present, you may need to repeat the steps above or take it to a professional cleaner to get those stubborn stains out. Happy stain-free wearing!
