Instructions for Cleaning Mud Stains from Your Tartan

  1. Before treating the stain, shake out your tartan fabric to loosen any remaining dirt and debris. If possible, vacuum the surface of the fabric to remove any dirt particles.
  2. Create a cleaning solution using two tablespoons of mild laundry detergent and one quart of lukewarm water. Use this mixture to sponge the tartan fabric in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the area with lukewarm water and use a stiff brush to scrub affected area. Be sure to rinse out the soap residue and keep scrubbing until all of the mud stain is removed.
  4. Mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water and use it to treat any remaining stubborn spots. Let it sit for five minutes and then rinse the area with cool water. Blot the area with a clean towel until all of the moisture is absorbed.
  5. Lay tartan fabric on a flat surface outdoors in the shade to dry. Avoid direct sunlight as it can cause fading.
