Steps for Cleaning Mud from Sweaters

  1. Let the mud dry completely on the sweater. Don't attempt to remove mud before it's dry or you risk smearing stain.
  2. Before you begin, check the care tag inside of the sweater to make sure the fabric can be safely washed in a washing machine.
  3. Carefully scrape the mud off the surface of the sweater using a brush with soft bristles. This will help to loosen the stain before you attempt to wash garment.
  4. Place the sweater into the washing machine and set the washer to a gentle cycle. Add a mild detergent or laundry stain remover to the load.
  5. Check the stain once the washing cycle is finished. If the mud stain is still present, repeat the wash cycle using more detergent or spot cleaner.
  6. After the stain has been removed, allow the sweater to air dry on a flat surface.

Tips for Keeping Your Clothes Mud-Free

  • When outside during wet or muddy weather, try to wear shoes that are easy to clean or waterproof boots.
  • Be sure to brush mud off of clothes as soon as possible to prevent it from drying and becoming difficult to remove.
  • Dry cleaning may be necessary for delicate fabrics that cannot be machine-washed.
