Silk is a delicate fabric, but mud stains don't have to ruin your favorite blouse or dress. With the right cleaning technique, you can remove the stain without damaging the fabric.
Before you begin cleaning the stain, it's important to pre-treat the area with a cleaning solution. You can make your own solution by mixing one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with one cup of cool water. Or, if you prefer, you can use a specialty stain remover that is formulated for silk garments.
Once the solution has been mixed, use a white cloth or cotton swab to gently dab the area until stain is saturated. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center so you don't spread the mud. Don't rub the fabric, as this can cause further damage.
Once you've pre-treated the area, you can move on to washing the mud stain out of the fabric. Using cold water, rinse the area thoroughly until the stain is removed. It may take several rinses to get the mud out completely.
You can also use a specialized detergent that is designed specifically for cleaning silk. If you're using a detergent, be sure to follow the instructions on package carefully. After washing, rinse the area again with cold water until all of soap is gone.
Once the mud stain has been removed, it's important to dry fabric properly. Since silk is a delicate fabric, you should never put it in the dryer. Instead, lay the garment flat on a clean towel and allow it to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can cause the fabric to fade.
If the mud stain is very stubborn, you may need to repeat Steps 1 and 2 a few times. You can also try adding a bit of vinegar to the pre-treatment mixture for extra cleaning power. And if stain still won't come out, it may be best to take the garment to a professional cleaner.
