Step 1: Scrape Off Excess Mud

Once you notice the mud stain, use your fingers or a blunt knife to scrape off as much of the dried mud as possible. Be sure to move gently so that you don’t damage the material of your shoe.

Step 2: Choose Your Cleaner

The type of cleaner you choose depends on material of your shoes. For leather, suede, and nubuck shoes, use a cleaner specifically designed for these materials. For synthetic materials like nylon and polyester, you can use a mild dish soap.

Step 3: Apply Your Cleaner

Start by dampening a cloth or sponge with the cleaner and gently rubbing it onto the mud stain. Increase pressure if needed to lift the stain, but be careful not to scrub too hard as this could damage the material. You can also use a soft bristle brush for tougher stains.

Step 4: Rinse the Area

Once the mud stain has been removed, use some lukewarm water to rinse the area and remove any remaining soap or cleaner. Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb excess water, then leave the shoes to air dry.

Step 5: Condition

After your shoes have completely dried, use a leather/suede conditioner to restore the original texture of the material and bring back its shine. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product.
