Mud stains can be difficult to remove from clothing, but with a few simple cleaning tips, you can have your shirt looking as good as new. The key is to act quickly and use the appropriate cleaning methods.

Removing Fresh Mud Stains

  • Brush off excess mud from clothing.
  • If fabric is still damp, use cold water to rinse off as much of the stain as possible.
  • If the mud has already dried, scrape it off with a dull knife or edge of a spoon.
  • Create a solution of liquid detergent and warm water and soak the garment for 30 minutes.

Removing Set-In Mud Stains

  • If the mud stain has set in, gently rub some laundry detergent into the fabric.
  • Rinse the garment with cold water.
  • Soak the garment in a solution of white vinegar and warm water for 30 minutes.
  • Wash the garment in the washing machine on the hottest setting that's safe for the fabric.
  • Once the garment has been laundered, check to make sure the stain is gone. If it's not, repeat the process until the stain is gone.

Tips for Preventing Future Mud Stains

  • Always pretreat mud stains with laundry detergent as soon as possible.
  • Be aware of where you are walking to avoid getting mud on your clothing.
  • Wear waterproof boots when possible.
  • Carry an extra pair of shoes in car so you don't have to walk through mud in your regular shoes.
