Mud stains are one of the most difficult types of stains to remove from clothing, especially from delicate fabrics. Shift dresses in particular can be tricky to clean, as they easily wrinkle when washed or agitated. But with the right approach, you can make sure your dress stays spotless and is ready for the next wear.

Before you begin trying to remove the mud stain, treat fabric gently to prevent further damage. Place shift dress on a flat surface, such as a tabletop or countertop, and carefully remove any remaining mud particles, using a clean cloth. If the mud is dry, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrape away the residue, making sure not to over-agitate the fabric.
Once mud has been removed, it's time to apply the stain remover of your choice. For best results, use a chemical stain remover or laundry detergent specifically designed for removing stains from delicate fabrics. Pour a small amount of product onto a clean cloth and rub it onto the affected area. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes, then wipe off with a damp cloth.
If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may need to use an oxygen bleach cleaner. Mix powder with water according to the instructions on the package, then pour the solution over the stained area. Allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before gently scrubbing with a toothbrush or stain scrubbing brush. Finally, rinse off any remaining solution with lukewarm water.
Once the stain is gone, lay the dress flat on a clean, dry towel and allow it to air dry. Do not place item in the dryer, as this can cause the fabric to shrink or become misshapen. When the dress is completely dry, it is ready to be worn.
