The first way to remove mud stains from a purse is to use soap and water. Start by dampening a soft cloth with lukewarm water. Squeeze out any excess water and then pour a few drops of mild dish soap onto the cloth. Gently rub the affected area on the purse until a lather forms. Rinse the cloth and repeat as needed. When the mud stain is gone, rinse the area with clean water and dry it with a clean towel.
If soap and water don't do the trick, try using white vinegar. Dilute a cup of white vinegar in two cups of cold water and dab the mixture onto the affected area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing lightly with a soft cloth. Rinse the area with cold water when finished. For tougher stains, mix equal parts white vinegar and baking soda to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 15-30 minutes before wiping away with a damp cloth. Rinse the area with cold water and dry thoroughly.
For particularly stubborn mud stains, you may need to break out the laundry detergent. Dilute a small amount of laundry detergent in a cup of lukewarm water and apply it to stain. Gently scrub the area and rinse with cold water. You can also use a laundry pre-treatment solution such as Shout® or OxiClean®. Simply follow package instructions for best results.
Mud stains can be difficult to remove, so it's important to take preventive measures. When walking with your purse in wet or muddy conditions, make sure to put it inside a plastic bag for extra protection. You can also treat your purse with a waterproof spray – this will help make it less susceptible to dirt and mud.
