If the mud stain is still fresh, take a clean cloth and gently dab it with cold water to blot up as much of the mud as possible. Once you've pre-treated the stain, apply a laundry detergent and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Once the detergent has had a chance to break down stain, launder the pullover in cold water. Avoid hot water as this could cause the stain to set permanently. If the stain is still present after laundering, repeat the process with a stronger detergent.
For tougher mud stains, spot treat the area by gently rubbing the fabric together with a mixture of liquid laundry detergent and warm water. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing the fabric with cold water. Repeat as needed.
If all else fails, use a commercial stain remover or an oxygen-based bleach to help lift and dissolve the mud stain from the fabric. Follow the instructions on the package for best results.
Finally, hang the pullover to dry in a well-ventilated space. Do not put the pullover in dryer as this can cause the stain to set permanently in the fabric.
