If mud gets on your hair tie, it’s important to address the stain right away. Mud can become more difficult to remove the longer it sits on the fabric. After your mud-stained hair tie has dried, you should begin the cleaning process.

Step 1: Pre-Treat Stain

Gently blot the stained area with a damp cloth or paper towel. This will help lift some of the staining from fabric so it’s easier to wash away. Rubbing fabric too hard might cause the stain to become imbedded even deeper.

Step 2: Use Soap and Detergent

Mix together liquid hand soap, laundry detergent, and water to create a thick paste. Dab paste onto stained area and let sit for a few minutes before scrubbing the residue off with a toothbrush. Once the paste is removed, rinse the area with cold water.

Step 3: Use White Vinegar

If the stain still remains after the above steps, white vinegar may help. Saturate the area with white vinegar and gently rub it into the fabric. Let the vinegar sit on the fabric for several minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat this process until the mud stain has been removed.

Step 4: Machine Wash

Once the mud stain has been removed, machine-wash the hair tie in cold water. As an added precaution, you can add a capful of bleach to the washing machine to help brighten the colors and freshen up the hair tie.
