If your mud stain has already dried, the first thing you should do is try to remove as much of the dirt as possible. Use a vacuum cleaner or soft brush to gently lift the dirt away, being careful not to spread the stain out into other areas.
Once you have removed as much of the mud as possible, using either a fabric cleaner or plain white vinegar, dab the area in an up and down motion with a damp cloth or sponge. The acidic content of the vinegar will break down the mud's residue and remove any remaining traces.
If this doesn't work, apply a small amount of liquid dishwashing detergent directly to the stain and use a damp cloth to scrub over the area. Once you've scrubbed away the mud, rinse the affected area with warm water and a clean cloth.
When trying to remove fresh mud stains, the key is to act quickly and gently. Start by flushing the affected area with cold water, then dab at stain with a damp cloth or sponge to remove as much of the mud as possible. Be sure to blot the area rather than rubbing, as this could spread the stain.

Finally, rinse area with cold water to remove the detergent and pat dry with a towel. If the stain persists, repeat the process until it is completely removed.
