Steps for Removing Mud from Flannel

  1. Check for colorfastness. Before you start trying to remove the stain, do a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the garment. Dip a white cloth in water, then dab a small amount of liquid laundry detergent onto cloth. Rub the stained area with the cloth to see if any color transfers to the white cloth.
  2. Gently blot stained area with a damp cloth or sponge soaked in cold water. Take care not to rub the fabric together or you may spread the stain.
  3. Wet the entire stained area with warm water. Be sure to wet the fabric before adding detergent or other cleaning products.
  4. Use a gentle detergent and mix it with warm water. Gently massage the detergent into the fabric and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse the fabric with warm water.
  5. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process with an oxygen-based bleach and warm water. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
  6. Hang garment up to air dry.

Tips for Successful Stain Removal

  • Always use cold water when cleaning a stain. Hot water can set the stain and make it harder to remove.
  • Be sure to check the care label on the garment to determine what type of detergent and temperature of water are safe for the fabric.
  • Never rub the stained area with a brush or scrubbing tool. This can cause the stain to spread and make it more difficult to remove.
  • If the stain is particularly stubborn, pre-treat it with a laundry stain remover before washing.
