Whether you’re dealing with fresh mud splatters or older mud stains, the treatment is the same. Here’s how to quickly and easily remove mud from denim:

Step 1: Pretreat the Stains

Mix together one tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with two cups of cold water. Using a clean white cloth, lightly dab the affected area with the detergent mixture. Don’t rub or scrub the mud stain, as this may cause it to spread or set deeper into fabric.

Step 2: Rinse & Soak

Once you’ve lightly dabbed mud stain with the detergent mixture, rinse area under cold running water. If the mud stains remain, let the garment soak in a bowl of cold water for 20-30 minutes. Check water after 20 minutes to make sure it hasn’t become muddy.

Step 3: Wash the Garment

Once the garment has finished soaking, launder it as usual. Be sure to follow the washing instructions provided on care label. You may use an enzymatic stain remover in addition to your regular laundry detergent to help lift the stains out.

Step 4: Air Dry & Evaluate

Once you’ve washed and dried the garment, check to see if any mud stains remain. If so, you can repeat steps 1-3. Once all of the mud stains are gone, you’ve successfully removed mud from your denim garment!

What should I do if the mud stains have set in?

If the mud stains have already set in, you may need to repeat steps 1-3 several times before the mud disappears. You can also try pretreating the mud stains with a product like Shout Advanced Gel, which is designed to tackle tough, set-in stains.
