What You'll Need

  • Cold water
  • Detergent
  • Brush
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Clean cloth

Step 1: Blot The Stain

The key to successfully removing mud stains from cotton twill is to act quickly. As soon as you realize you have a stain, take a clean cloth and blot it dry – this will absorb some of the mud and limit the damage caused by it.

Step 2: Rinse the Area with Cold Water

Once you’ve blotted area, you’ll want to rinse the affected area with cold water. This will help to loosen mud and make it easier to remove. Just be sure not to rub the fabric together too much while rinsing as this could spread the stain even further.

Step 3: Apply Detergent

To give the stain the best chance of removal, you’ll want to apply some detergent to the area. Make sure you use one designed for delicate fabrics as this will be gentler on fabric and also be better for the environment. Use a brush to work the detergent into the stain and then leave it for around 10 minutes to allow it to really get to work on the stain.

Step 4: Wash in Cold Water

Once detergent has had time to soak into fabric, fill a sink or bucket with cold water and submerge the stained area. Let it soak for up to an hour before washing it according to the instructions on the garment’s label. Be sure to not use any fabric softener when washing as this can cause the mud stain to set permanently.

Step 5: Apply White Vinegar or Hydrogen Peroxide

If the mud stain hasn’t been completely removed after washing, you may need to try and remove the remaining mark with either white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. For either of these methods, make sure you spot test them first on a hidden area of the garment as they can both discolour certain materials. If using white vinegar, combine an equal amount of vinegar and water and apply it to the area with a clean cloth. If using hydrogen peroxide, apply it directly onto the mud stain and let it sit for around ten minutes before washing the garment in cold water.

Conclusion

Cleaning mud stains from cotton twill doesn’t have to be an impossible task. Using the steps outlined above, you can easily remove stubborn mud stains from your favourite garments. Be sure to follow the instructions on the garment’s label to ensure the best results possible.
