Mud stains on boots can be a real nuisance, but with a bit of elbow grease and some common household products, you can have your shoes looking like new in no time. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean mud stains from boots.
The first step is to use a scraper, such as a dull knife or spatula, to remove the majority of the mud from the surface of the boots. Be gentle when scraping off the mud – too much force can scratch surface of the shoe. After scraping off as much mud as possible, you'll be left with the majority of the stain still intact.
Create a solution of mild soap and warm water, either in a bucket or sink. You’ll want to use a mild soap so as not to damage the fabric or material of your shoes.
Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the mild soap solution and scrub at affected area of the boots. Be gentle while scrubbing, and keep the cloth wet with soap solution to avoid damaging the material. Work at stain until the majority of the mud has been removed, then rinse with clean water and let dry.
For more stubborn stains, you can use white vinegar. Again, be sure to use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub affected area, then rinse with clean water and let dry. Note that white vinegar may discolor certain materials, so do a patch test on an inconspicuous area first.
For deep set-in stains, you may want to try a commercial stain remover. Follow the directions on the product’s label and rinse with clean water. Allow boots to air dry.
Cleaning mud stains from your beloved boots doesn't have to be a daunting task. With a bit of elbow grease and some natural cleaning agents, you can have your shoes good as new in just a few simple steps.
