Remove Stains from Washable Materials

If the stained fabric is safe to machine wash, the stain removal process is rather straightforward. Start by dabbing the area with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol and blotting until the liquid has been fully absorbed. Once that’s done, you can treat the stain with a laundry stain remover or with a paste made from combining 2 parts liquid detergent and 1 part vinegar. Rub the paste into the stain before throwing the garment into the wash. Make sure to use cold water and check that the stain has gone prior to drying.

Remove Stains from Delicate Fabrics

Delicate fabrics like silk and wool are trickier to restore, even with a stain remover. Start by dabbing area lightly with lukewarm water and a clean cloth. Then treat the stain with a white vinegar solution, applied directly with a cloth saturated in equal parts vinegar and water. Dab the solution into the fabric repeatedly and then blot the area with a clean, damp cloth. The stain should lift out along with the vinegar solution. Hang the garment up to air dry afterwards.

Tips for Proofing Against Stains in the Future

No one wants repeated visits to the stain-removal cycle! Consider investing in a barrier spray or repellent if you wear fabrics susceptible to staining easily. Spray the fabric evenly and let it hang until the product has dried. The repellent will form a protective barrier around fibers, preventing future stains from seeping in. This can also be done to existing garments that feature a delicate fabric.
