White ties are a wardrobe staple that should be kept pristine, but a mouthwash stain can mar the look of these stylish accessories. The good news is that with the correct cleaning techniques you can typically remove these unsightly marks. Here’s how to get your tie back in tip-top shape.

Begin With Care

When attempting to remove the mouthwash stain, it’s important to start out with some basic care precautions. First and foremost, carefully read the tie’s fabric label and take note of the suggested cleaning instructions. If there is no label present, assume that the tie should be dry-cleaned only.

Pre-Treat with Detergent

If the tie can be washed, begin by wetting affected area with lukewarm water, then apply a dab of non-bleach detergent to the area. Let the detergent sit for about five minutes before giving it a gentle rub and then rinsing it off with cold water.

Shaving Cream to the Rescue

If the stain persists, try using a small amount of shaving cream on the area and rubbing it with a soft cloth. This should help loosen the stain and allow it to wash away. Afterwards, rinse out the remaining shaving cream with cold water and then move on to the next step.

Spot-Cleaning with Ammonia

If the stain remains, try mixing one teaspoon of household ammonia with a pint of lukewarm water and use this mixture to spot-clean the stain. Use a soft cloth and dab the area gently, taking care not to scrub or rub too hard. Afterwards, rinse the area with cold water and blot it dry with a clean cloth.

Last Resort: OxiClean

If all else fails, you can use OxyClean to treat tough stains. Mix one tablespoon of OxyClean powder with two cups of warm water and stir until dissolved. Dip a fresh cloth into the mixture and wring it out, then use it to blot the affected area. Repeat as necessary and then rinse and dry the tie when finished.

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Proper cleaning and maintenance of your ties can help prevent future stains and keep them looking their best. After every use, hang up the tie to air out and brush it lightly with a clothes brush. Also, store your ties in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight to avoid fading.
