The most important tool to have when it comes to removing mouthwash stains is gentle detergent. You’ll also need a bucket or basin of cold water and a few clean white cloths. If the mouthwash has dried onto the shearling, you may need a soft-bristled brush, too.
Before you begin cleaning process, use a pre-treatment solution to help lift stain from the fabric. There are commercial pre-treating solutions available at most grocery stores. Another option is to mix a teaspoon of liquid dish soap with 2 cups of cold water. Dip a cloth into the solution to pre-treat the stained area.
Once pre-treatment process is complete, it’s time to start washing shearling. Use mild detergent and cold water—never hot water—to avoid damaging the material. Use a damp cloth to gently scrub the stained area, then rinse with cold water.
Finally, let the shearling air dry. Avoid using heat or placing the fabric in the dryer; these methods will only damage the material further. Allow fabric to hang in a cool, well-ventilated area until it’s completely dry.
