The first step is to always treat the stain as soon as possible. If left, the mouthwash will become embedded into the fibers of the lace and become much harder to clean. Begin by rinsing the affected area with cold water, taking care to seek out entire stain. Once complete, take a soft cloth and, using a gentle detergent, gently dab the area. Absorb as much of the liquid as you can.

If the stain has started to set in, creating a discolored patch, then you will need to use a stronger method. Soak the fabric in a mixture of 1 tablespoon of color-safe liquid detergent and 1 litre of lukewarm water for around 10 minutes. When complete, rinse the corner and check for any signs of fading.

If this doesn’t work, then you may have to go one step further. Fill a bowl with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 1 liter of cold water and soak affected area for up to 30 minutes. This should help to remove the stain and restore the lace to its original condition. Once finished, rinse the piece thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.

Should these methods fail to remove mouthwash from the fabric, then your last option is to take it to the dry cleaners. In most cases, the specialist solvents and techniques used by the professionals should be able to shift even the most stubborn stains.
