Before starting to treat a stubborn mouthwash stain on your pencil skirt, figure out what type of fabric you’re dealing with. Knowing whether it’s silk, polyester, cotton, or a blend will help you decide which treatments are safe to use and which aren’t.
Now that you know what kind of fabric you’re dealing with, it’s time to start pretreating the stain. Taking a few moments to properly pre-treat the stain can make a big difference in its removal effectiveness. Start by dampening the stained area with cold water. If you’re dealing with a thicker fabric, like cotton, then use warm water instead.
Then, apply a few drops of mild detergent or dishwashing liquid to the area. Gently work the detergent into the fabric using small circular motions. Allow the detergent to sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing area with cold or warm water (depending on the fabric).
Once you’ve pretreated the stain, you can move on to soaking the skirt in hot water. Using hot water is important because it helps to lift the stain from fabric fibers. Fill a sink or basin with hot water (as hot as the fabric can handle) and add a few drops of laundry detergent. Place the garment in water and allow it to soak for 30 minutes.
After the soaking period is over, remove the garment from water and give it a rinse. Then put it in the washing machine on a regular cycle using cold or warm water (again, depending on the fabric). When the cycle is finished, lay the garment flat to dry. Do not tumble dry it in the dryer.
