The first step is to soak up excess moisture from the stain with a dry, white and absorbent cloth. Make sure to blot, not rub, the stain because rubbing fabric can cause it to tear. To prevent the stain from setting deeper into the fabric, begin from the outside and work your way inward.
It is important to select the right detergent for the job. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleaches which can cause damage to fabric. Instead, use a mild, non-chlorine soap or laundering detergent. If you are unsure which detergent to choose, seek advice from a professional dry cleaner.
Before laundering the fabric, pre-treat stain by applying a small amount of detergent directly to the affected area. Gently rub the detergent into fabric with your fingers. Allow it to sit for at least two minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
Once the stain has been pre-treated, it is time to launder the fabric. Set the washing machine to a mildly warm temperature and select a gentle cycle. Add the fabric with a small amount of detergent and let the washing machine do rest. When the cycle is complete, hang the fabric to air dry.
