Although mouthwash is a handy item to have in your bathroom cabinet, spills can happen, leading to an unfortunate and embarrassing stain on your clothing. Luckily, there are several different ways to remove or reduce the appearance of the mouthwash stain before you wear that beloved cocktail dress again.

Removing the Stain When It's Fresh

The first option for removing mouthwash stain is dealing with the fresh stain while it's still wet. First, blot the stained area with a sponge or cloth. Don't rub too hard or you could cause the stain to spread further. Once you've blotted up as much as possible, you can mix together some cold water and liquid dish soap. Use a clean cloth to apply the soapy solution to the stain and gently work it in. When done properly, this should remove the entire mouthwash stain, but be sure not to scrub too hard or you may damage the delicate fabric. Then, rinse away any remaining soap and pat area dry.

Soaking the Stain Into Non-Delicate Fabrics

For fabrics which aren't as delicate, such as cotton or polyester, you can try soaking the stain in a mixture of cold water and vinegar. Start by creating a solution that is three parts cold water and one part white vinegar. Make sure the fabric is completely submerged in the solution and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Afterwards, rinse the fabric and check to see if the stain is gone. If not, repeat this process until the mouthwash stain disappears. Then, launder dress as normal.

Incorporating Stain-Lifting Products

For really tough stains, some extra steps must be taken. A great way to tackle mouthwash stains is by using a pre-treat stain remover. These products work wonders for getting out difficult stains and spots. Apply the product to the stained area, then soak the garment in a mixture of cold water and laundry detergent for at least 15 minutes. After that, toss the garment into washing machine and launder as you normally would. Give the fabric a look afterwards to make sure the stain is totally gone. If it's still there, repeat the process until it finally vanishes.
