For newer and lighter stains, consider using soap and water. Use cold or lukewarm water, as warm water can cause the stain to set in deeper. Take a non-abrasive sponge, such as a cellulose sponge, and soak it in the soapy water. Lightly rub the stain with the sponge then rinse away suds. Do not scrub too hard, as this may damage wool fabric.
For tougher or older medicine stains, you will need to take extra steps. Start by blotting the stain with a cloth, then mix 1 teaspoon of mild detergent with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Test this solution on a small area first, to make sure it won't harm wool fabric. Apply the solution to the stain with a soft brush, then lightly rub fabric with a damp cloth. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse in cold water.
If other methods have not been successful in removing the stain, try using rubbing alcohol. Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and lightly rub the stain. Be careful not to overwet the fabric. Once the stain is gone, rinse area with cold water. For tougher stains, you may need to repeat the process.
Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Apply the mixture onto the stain with a damp cloth and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse the area with cold water and check if stain has been removed. If the stain persists, give it another try with the same mixture and repeat steps.
With the right steps, medicine stains on wool fabric don't have to be a problem. Whether you choose to use soap and water, detergent and vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or vinegar and baking soda, you will soon be able to enjoy your favorite wool garment without unsightly stains.
