Step 1: Treat Stain Right Away

The first and most important step in getting rid of medicine stains is to take action as soon as you notice them. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that the stain will set in and become harder to remove.

Step 2: Scrape off any Excess Medicine

Using a spoon or dull knife, gently scrape off any excess medicine from the fabric. Be sure to work gently, as you don’t want to damage the fabric.

Step 3: Pre-Treat with Detergent

Apply a pre-treatment detergent directly onto the stained area. Allow detergent to sit for 10-15 minutes before moving onto the next step.

Step 4: Wash in Cold Water

Wash fabric in cold water using a gentle detergent. If the care label advises against machine-washing, hand-wash the item instead.

Step 5: Check for Residue

Once you’ve washed garment, check for any remaining residue. If needed, repeat the pre-treating, washing and checking steps until the stain is gone.

Step 6: Air-Dry in Sunlight

Finally, allow the fabric to air-dry in a sunny spot. Avoid using a dryer, as this may set in the stain.

Tips for Preventing Medicine Stains

  • Always use a cloth or paper towel to wipe up any spills.
  • Store medicines securely in a cabinet that's out of reach from children and pets.
  • If a spill occurs, act quickly and blot the spot with an absorbent cloth.
  • Read the label and follow the directions carefully when administering medicines.
