When it comes to cleaning a down jacket, the most important step is to check the label for specific care instructions. Every material needs to be treated differently, so make sure you know what yours requires. In some cases, a down jacket may be too delicate to try and remove the stain yourself.
If the garment care label indicates you can safely proceed with a home remedy, pre-treat the stain before laundering. You can do this by mixing ½ teaspoon of liquid detergent with two cups of cool water. Dip a white cloth or paper towel in the mixture and dab it onto the stained area.
Once the pre-treatment solution has been applied to stained area, place the down jacket in a washing machine set to a cool water cycle. Use a mild liquid detergent and avoid using detergent containing bleach. If your down jacket is extra soiled, use a longer cycle and add a ½ cup of white vinegar to the wash.
Down jackets should never be placed in a dryer, as the heat can cause the feathers to clump up, making them less effective at insulation. Instead, lay the jacket flat and allow it to air dry. After an hour or two, flip it over and let the other side dry. A fan can also be used to speed up the process.
