Mix a solution of warm water and liquid laundry detergent, then dab the mayonnaise stain with a clean cloth dipped in the solution. Take extra care when scrubbing - you don't want to damage the tartan fabric.
Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water and, again, use a clean cloth or sponge to dab stained area. Don't rub or scrub the mayonnaise spot with this solution as it could make the stain worse.
Mix two tablespoons of clear ammonia with one-quarter cup of mild soap, and apply it to the mayonnaise stain. Gently dab the mixture into the fabric, but avoid heavy scrubbing.
You can also use an oxygen-based stain remover, which is available at many supermarkets and hardware stores. Follow directions on specific product that you purchase.
When taking on mayonnaise stains on tartan fabrics, it's important to remember to act quickly and to use the most appropriate method for the material. Depending on the fabric, some methods may work better than others but, with a bit of time and effort, you should be able to remove the stain.
